What is the EndoFLIP ?

EndoFLIP (Endolumenal Functional Lumen Imaging Probe) is a new diagnostic procedure in the world of gastroenterology that aids in producing highresolution images of the gastroesophageal junction to provide more quickly and accurately diagnose gastrointestinal disorders

Essentially, EndoFLIP helps to improve what your gastroenterologist can see going on inside your gastrointestinal tract. Not only does EndoFLIP allow for a clearer image, but it also provides detailed measurements and pressures within the esophagus, all of which play an important role in properly diagnosing a patient.

What Problems Can the EndoFLIP Detect?

EndoFLIP can help diagnose a range of gastrointestinal disorders, particularly those related to abnormal esophageal function, such as achalasia, GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease), and esophagogastric junction outflow obstruction. The procedure measures the diameter, pressure, and compliance of the GI tract to detect potential blockages, reduced motility, or structural abnormalities that could be causing digestive symptoms.

How Does EndoFLIP Work?

EndoFLIP is a minimally invasive medical device. It is not necessarily a brand-new procedure, but rather, it is a device used to enhance current procedures such as endoscopy.

During an upper endoscopy, a catheter is threaded down the esophagus and into the stomach where a balloon attached to the end of the catheter then expands. In addition to the balloon, the catheter also possesses pairs of electrodes.

The electrodes send out a small electrical current from inside the balloon that interacts with a conductive fluid to create a two-dimensional readout of what the tract looks like. Your gastroenterologist can view this image in real time, while also recording the data to reference later.

This entire process allows the gastroenterologist to see each and every detail from within the esophageal wall, which may otherwise go unnoticed during a regular endoscopy. EndoFLIP has now made it easier than ever to assess the function of a patient’s esophagus, diagnose their condition, and get them started on an ideal treatment plan.

When is the EndoFLIP Procedure Used?

The EndoFLIP ® Procedure is used when patients experience symptoms like difficulty swallowing, persistent heartburn, or unexplained chest pain that may be related to GI disorders. It’s often recommended for patients who haven’t responded well to traditional treatments and need a more detailed examination to uncover underlying GI issues. EndoFLIP is also useful in guiding the treatment for specific esophageal conditions.

How to Prepare for the EndoFLIP Procedure?

To prepare for an EndoFLIP Procedure, patients are typically asked to avoid eating or drinking for several hours before the procedure. It’s important to inform your healthcare provider of any medications, allergies, or health conditions prior to the appointment. Your GI specialist will provide clear instructions to ensure optimal results and a smooth experience.

How is the EndoFLIP Procedure Performed?

During the procedure, a catheter with a balloon tip is gently inserted through the mouth and into the esophagus while the patient is under sedation. The balloon is inflated and measures various pressure points and flexibility within the esophagus or stomach. The procedure usually takes about 15 to 30 minutes, and patients are closely monitored to ensure comfort and safety.

How Long Does It Take to Recover from the EndoFLIP Procedure?

Recovery from the EndoFLIP Procedure is typically quick. Most patients experience minimal discomfort and can resume normal activities within a few hours. You may feel a slight soreness in the throat, but this should subside shortly after the procedure. Full recovery and a return to routine activities can usually be expected within the same day.

What Are the Risks Associated with the EndoFLIP Procedure?

Like any medical procedure, EndoFLIP has some risks, though they are minimal. These may include a sore throat, mild discomfort, or, rarely, more serious complications such as bleeding or infection. Your healthcare provider will discuss potential risks with you before the procedure to ensure you are well-informed.
